The sixth generation Airport Extreme Base Station features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi support. That means it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time. So no matter which band your wireless devices use, they’ll automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance.
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the Airport Extreme Base Station can reach data rates of up to 1.3Gbps, which is triple the 802.11n standard. 802.11ac Wi-Fi also provides double the channel bandwidth with 80MHz-wide channels providing more room for data to flow faster.
The redesigned Airport Extreme is now taller with antennas located at the top of the device and an increased number of antennas to six, three for 2.4GHz and three for 5GHz.
With AirPort Extreme, getting your new Wi?Fi network up and running is quick and easy. That’s because a setup assistant is built into iOS and into AirPort Utility for OS X. As soon as you plug in your AirPort Extreme and connect it to your DSL or cable modem, you can follow the simple instructions on your Mac or iOS device. The setup assistant does all the work, so you don’t have to.
The vertical design not only improves Wi?Fi performance, it also saves you valuable desk space. At less than 4 inches square, the footprint of AirPort Extreme is 64 percent smaller than its predecessor. And to save even more space, the power supply is built in.

A Leap Forward for Backup Introducing Time Capsule. Automatic wireless backup for your Mac. Available in 500GB and 1TB models.
One Click. Continuous Backup. Backing up is something we all know we should do, but often don’t. And while disaster is a great motivator, now it doesn’t have to be. Because with Time Capsule, the nagging need to back up has been replaced by automatic, constant protection. And even better, it all happens wirelessly, saving everything important, including your sanity.
Built for Time Machine. Time Capsule includes a wireless 500GB or 1TB hard drive designed to work with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard. Just set Time Capsule as the designated backup drive for Time Machine, and that’s it. Depending on how much data you have, your initial backup with Time Capsule could take overnight or longer. After it completes, only changed files are backed up–automatically, wirelessly, and in the background. So you never have to worry about backing up again.
Backup for everyone. Have multiple Macs in your house? Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Leopard-based Mac on your wireless network. No longer do you have to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up. Time Capsule spares you the work.
Room for it all. Time Capsule is your one place for backing up everything. Its massive 500GB or 1TB server-grade hard drive gives you all the capacity and safety you need. So whether you have 250 songs or 250,000 songs to back up, room is the last thing you’ll run out of. And considering all that storage and protection come packaged in a high-speed Wi-Fi base station starting at $299, data isn’t the only thing you’re saving.
The Ultimate Wireless Base Station More than just a wireless hard drive, Time Capsule is also a full-featured AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n technology. Experience a high-speed wireless network and a breakthrough way to back up all the Mac computers on your network. All in one device.
Fits your Wi-Fi lifestyle. Time Capsule uses the 802.11n draft 2.0 specification, so you can rest assured that it works with certified 802.11n draft 2.0 products. And it’s compatible with Macs and PCs that use 802.11a, b, or g technologies, as well as wireless devices such as iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple TV.
Print command central. The included USB port is great for sharing a printer throughout your wireless network. Time Capsule and the Bonjour networking technology let everyone in the house or office — Mac and PC users alike — take advantage of one centrally located printer. And if you want to share both a printer and an additional hard drive, you can. Just connect a USB hub to Time Capsule. Whatever the combination, Time Capsule divides and conquers.
Works with Mac and PC. Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily.

I upgraded my home network from a 802.11g Linksys wifi router / 4 port hub to this 802.11n Time Capsule. Not only did my internet connection get noticeably faster and more reliable, but my computer-to-computer networking speed increased DRAMATICALLY. They aren't lying about how much faster the 802.11n is!
Another great selling point is the Time Capsule's always-on network drive. I don't use it as a wireless backup the way it is intended as all of my computers already have their own dedicated local backup drives. But I do use the network drive a lot. You see, I also have an Apple TV, which I do not use the way it's really intended either. I store all the content that I download off the internets on the Time Capsule network drive, then the Apple TV connects to the Time Capsule and thus has access to everything all the time. This way even with my computers asleep my Apple TV can read data from the networked drive which is always there.
I have checked and haven't found any sort of increase in my utility bill, so I don't think it uses dramatically more power than my old wifi router did, despite including a server-grade hard drive. Also, it's lovely to look at, totally silent, and easy to setup. Win!
I ordered a 500GB TimeCapsule from Amazon last week and received it in only 2 days using free Super-Saver shipping!Bravo Amazon!
I bought the TimeCapsule along with the Mac Box Set (the 3-in-1 Apple software collection that includes OS 10.5.6, iLife 09, and iWork 09).Installing all the software updates and the TimeCapsule to my 2005 modeliMac G5 was quick and easy.I can't believe I had put off adding a backup hard drive and a wifi network for so long.I've used Macs for over 20 years and have never had a hard drive failure, but with all the photos and music that I've compiled over the years I knew it was in my best interest to have abackup in place just in case. And, after getting an iPod Touch over the holidays, I was really interested in finally setting up wifi.
The TimeCapsule is typical Apple:A simple and elegant design that is both functional and appealing. It's also space saving since it combines both a wifi router and an external hard drive into one clean unit.Apple's Airport and Time Machine software are both easy to use.
The TimeCapsule is not the cheapest way to go, but its price is very competitive, especially considering the ease-of-use and elegant all-in-one design. Highly recommended.
After waiting a month or so for it to arrive, I finally got to try it out. Out of the box, it worked fine with my current AirPort Express setup (I originally tried TC as a client). But software said a Firmware update was available, which I ran. It didn't come back on-line. After about 30 minutes of trying everything and resetting it a dozen times, I decided to remove the AirPort Express from the network and put new TC in its place. Worked great after that. Don't know if I will need the 2nd station for WDS or not - because range seems fine right now.
Network speeds are fast. Disk is easy to write to. Acts just like any other hard disk, protectable by password. I am not using as back up exactly, but more like file server and base station.
Very elegant design and love the fact that I can plug in hub for multiple printers, as well as additional USB hard drive.
One day, after looking through all my photos, I got really paranoid about losing them, my iTunes and everything. After all, hard drives all fail, right? And I have been lucky for a long time, so the laws of averages were clearly catching up with me.
The Time Machine promised automatic back-ups, speedier wireless connection to the internet and even wireless printing. This is all good stuff and so in a short time the UPS guy came and I went about installing it.
If you are going to use it as an internet connection, not just a back-up, get all that UP, IP, PPP nerdy stuff written down somewhere. For some reason, TM substituted some random numbers and I couldn't get it to connect.
Similarly, if you want wireless printing, and you do as it is sooo cool, you have to make sure you have already downloaded and installed the latest driver for your printer. Even so, there is the usual problem with too many places to locate printers, select them and all that. I ended up going through the installation procedure several times and then, click-click, it just worked. I don't know why I had a problem or how I fixed it.
The whole printer preferences thing is so much better than it was years ago, but still needs simplification.
I did my initial back-up wirelessly. It took a few hours, but went smoothly.
Time Machine works perfectly, the interface is easy and subsequent back-up are very quick and behind the scenes. Totally unobtrusive. It looks very nice.
It does run quite warm, even when nothing is happening. This seems like a waste of electricity to me, and perhaps a shorter life than it should have. Set-up could be easier, perhaps even automatic for simple installations. These are the reasons why I took off a star.
Time Machine is, I think, the best choice for most people and I recommend it. Note that a lot of the complaints involve complex environments, so if you have a bunch of computers of different kinds, mixed operating systems and various networks going it will not be easy. This has to be expected.
