I've had this laptop 6 months now, and I can confirm more than ever that it's one of the worst purchases I've ever made. Endless problems from day one and even a few surprisingly decent tech support experiences couldn't redeem this disaster.
I won't go into too long of details, but I received this laptop new and already out of the box the audio didn't work. After several days scouring the web for any kind of help on what felt like an issue exclusive to me, I found some help with Dell support. Though, they could only seem to remedy the problem by installing some weird work-around version of windows on my laptop; strike one. The audio should work out of the box and should be an easy fix, otherwise you've sold a defective product.
This "fix" ended up making the already disappointingly slow XPS feel that much worse. I felt like my 7 year old HP was running circles around this thing. Needless to say, that's NOT what you experience after spending $1500 hard-earned dollars on a new computer; strike two.
About two weeks ago I tried to turn on my XPS and it was dead. No warning signs, nothing. This product seemed defective out of the box and it seemed a fitting conclusion. I will say that after contacting Dell support, they were pretty good about getting a new motherboard replaced in the XPS quickly.
And that would be great, if it'd fixed the problem. But it didn't. The computer now boots up, but only about half the time. So strike three and back on the merry-go-round of endless technological woe.
I never have these sorts of problems. I can make a laptop last forever but it's got to be quality to start with and you have to be able to use it. I made a mistake here assuming that a $1500 laptop was going to be better than the $500 HP I've had for nearly a decade now. But no, this XPS has me ready to pull an Office Space, take it out into a field and beat it with a baseball bat; at least then I'd get some use out of it.
I could simply be unlucky here, but this is my honest review based on my personal experience with the laptop and coupled with the fact that I have a Dell 4k monitor I bought in June that now has issues of it's own, I'm not gambling on another Dell product. 1/5 stars.
Edit: the seller "amazing topdeals" came thru, apologized and offered me a credit for having to buy the docking station. While it was annoying in the moment, I am very pleased with the outcome.
I ordered an XPS 9343 in the past. It's a great computer. I ordered another one, because my kids are now doing school online an wanted the same computer (no fighting) The problem is I received an XPS 13, which is a similiar computer, however, the xps 13 does not have any typical USB ports. It has USB-C miniports... so now I have to buy a $100 docking stating,so that all my typical USB accessories can be connected to it... you know.. a monitor (no hdmi port or mini dvi port) cant connect usb keyboard, usb wireless mouse, usb printer. So even though the computer specs are sim... and at a sim price point. You will have to buy a bunch of extra converters or buy new accessories. Very disapointed.
Sleek, speedy and efficient. I had been drooling over purchasing this laptop for about 2 months before taking the plunge. I am very happy that I did finally make the purchase. I like the size, the weight and the overall appearance of the laptop. It came with a minimum of trial software that was easy to dismiss. I recently did a clean install of Windows 10 and I can fully appreciate the laptop even more!
The only problem I have had was some difficulty connecting to my new combo modem/router using the 5Ghz band. The router was using a default bandwidth of 80Mhz on that band and was overwhelming the sensitive WiFi of the laptop. Lowering the bandwidth to 40Mhz in the router software produced a stable and fast 5Ghz with a connection speed of 400mbps or almost 3x faster than the 2.4Ghz band.
Pros and Cons: Dell has done a great job in mitigating the differences in the variety of features that are available with the XPS 13. Case in point, opening the case, the case seems difficult to open from the front. However, if you place one hand on the back edge of the laptop and with your other, lift the top up with your thumb, it opens easily and without getting fingerprints on the glass inside. Next, the touchscreen, it is highly reflective and may seem like an issue at first, but, you get used to it and it becomes less of a nuisance in short time. I got the touchscreen model because it afforded a better resolution that I like. I don't get 15 hours of battery charge because this unit had the i7 processor and higher screen resolution. The resulting battery life is fine.
