Crisp and Clean 1080p Upscaling… and Ready for Next Generation Displays, NOW!

4k and 1080p

Onkyo’s A/V receiver provides the finest, most beautiful and pristine 1080p upscaling you can find, thanks to the Marvell Qdeo™ video-processing chip that erases video noise and artifacts such as jaggies and feathering. The result: astoundingly crisp video. Played back on a compatible widescreen display, your Blu-ray Discs and standard DVDs will look AMAZING: more detailed and cinematic than ever. While deftly handling the most current high-def display formats, Onkyo’s also the first in the world to support the coming full 4K upscaling (3840 x 2160) of standard video sources such as 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced-to-progressive conversion and scaling are performed by a high-quality Marvell Qdeo video-processing chip.

3D and ARC

All Onkyo A/V receivers support the latest in 3D technology. Play 3D movies, games, and broadcast content in cinematic quality in your own home and be amazed by the realistic quality. The HDMI® inputs let you connect multiple high-def sources, such as a Blu-ray player, a gaming console, and a cable/satellite tuner. The HDMI output, on the other hand, lets you send a pristine signal to a compatible high-resolution display. Audio Return Channel allows audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner to be sent “upstream” via HDMI to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.

A Suite of Audyssey Technologies

Audyssey 2EQ tailors multi-channel audio for your home theater speaker set-up by measuring three room positions and applying a resolution filter to the satellite speakers to correct for room acoustics.

Audyssey Dynamic EQ maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content (for example, during commercial breaks) while optimizing the dynamic range.

Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz

Allows reconfiguration of the surround back channels to deliver “front height” channels. These channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that adds a new vertical dimension to your movies and games. Audyssey DSX provides a similar front-height speaker option that likewise works to create a more enveloping home theater experience.

Change Your Receiver’s Settings Seamlessly

Thanks to Onkyo’s overlaid graphical on-screen display (OSD), set-up menus appear on top of the video image you’re watching, so you don’t have to switch to a blank screen background. Easily navigate intuitive menus to maximize all of the features and benefits of your Onkyo A/V receiver. The OSD and Graphical User Interface (GUI) both operate over HDMI, making excellent use of that versatile interface.

Extra Connectivity Options

Use PC-IN to easily connect your notebook or mediacenter PC to your Onkyo AV receiver, and watch your movie files on your flatscreen TV. You can now easily watch internet videos, PC-stored movies and pictures on your TV. (Audio connectivity may vary depending on your computer hardware, but Onkyo A/V receivers support a wide range of different interfaces.)

Onkyo’s TX-8255 A/V Stereo Receiver: Getting Back to the Basics for the Sake of Audio Quality

While new technologies come and go, the fundamentals of competent receiver design remain constant. It is best to think of it in simple terms: a power supply, an input stage, a driver stage, and an output stage that all combine to amplify signals without any loss in quality. The current that actually drives the loudspeakers comes from a power source via the receiver’s power supply. You can never underestimate the importance of the power supply, and all other audio processing functions cannot rule over good solid amplification. This is the direction Onkyo has taken with the TX-8255. Built for those people who value the benefits of time-proven amplification design, the TX-8255 takes core Onkyo technology–and an array of features you’ll actually use–to bring you a no-nonsense stereo receiver that will deliver audio and radio signals with agreeable quality.

Superb Design

The TX-8255 includes Onkyo’s exclusive Wide Range Amplifier Technology

With its continued excellence in sound reproduction, Onkyo has once again created a versatile stereo receiver for the music lover in you. The TX-8255 stereo receiver offers superb functionality and dual-room capability that will be hard to match. Onkyo exclusives like Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT), discrete output stage circuitry, massive power transformer, and heavy-duty extruded heat sink offer the cleanest signal on the market. Most of the receiver’s audio processing is handled automatically, with little intervention on your part. However, it is so advanced; its discrete output reproduces music with unmatched sonic clarity and dynamic power.

This receiver features a high-end design approach encompassing everything from its massive power transformer design and high-current, low-impedance drive to discrete output circuitry and minimal use of negative feedback. This enables the receiver to combine tighter bass, superb transient response and enhanced presence at any volume level. Remote Interactive (RI) capability enables you to simply connect your iPod to your receiver through Onkyo’s RI Dock option for the iPod (DS-A2). Your iPod effectively becomes another Onkyo component flowing through the TX-8255.

In a Nutshell

The TX-8255 is a 2 x 50W (@ 8 ohms) stereo receiver capable of delivering breathtaking stereo sound. It features 5-sets of audio inputs, 2-sets of audio outputs, individual treble, bass, and balance controls, Remote Interactive (RI) port, A/B speaker switching, banana plug speaker posts, and an AM/FM tuner. Because of the high efficiency of its design, this powerful receiver produces exceptional sound quality, and clarity in every audible detail. With speaker A/B selectors and dedicated speaker terminals, this receiver offers the capability to send audio to a second room. In addition, the built-in IR port enables multi-room distribution with optional control systems.

Processing 1080p Video and High-Def Surround Sound via HDMI 1.3a

With the latest HDMI version and advanced A/V processing capabilities, the TX-SR606 is a powerful control center for all highdefinition media, including Blu-ray Disc and HD broadcasts. You can connect up to four components via HDMI to receive and switch compatible sources for a pure digital connection to an HDTV.Also, all multichannel audio–from bit-for-bit streams to standard Dolby Digital–can be digitally transported via HDMI for processing by the TX-SR606.This version of HDMI enables CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), greater bandwidth to deal with higher resolutions, 36-bit Deep Color, and high frame rates.

HDMI Video Upscaling to 1080i and Faroudja DCDi Edge (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) Technology

The TX-SR606’s HDMI inputs can receive pristine digital video from HDMI-enabled components for a single-cable output to a display device with an HDMI or DVI connection. 1080p video is processed as it is, but all other signals can be upscaled to 1080i via HDMI. Upscaling takes the video resolution to pure HD quality, and it better matches the native resolution of today’s high-definition displays. To further improve performance on high-definition displays, the TX-SR606 features a deinterlacing chip with Faroudja DCDi Edge technology, which effectively eliminates video artifacts.

The Full Range of Next-Generation, High-Definition Surround-Sound Codecs

The TX-SR606 has the decoding technologies–Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio–to enable a lossless, bit-for-bit soundtrack that is identical to that of the studio master. Both codecs are designed for the Blu-ray Disc format. The receiver also handles two “lossy” technologies: Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. Dolby Digital Plus has been designed for high-definition video delivered via disc media, broadcasts and online content. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, meanwhile, offers a greater bit rate, a higher sampling rate, and more channels than the core DTS technology.

The included remote can function as a universal
remote for many HDTVS and movie players

RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) for System Control

Courtesy of HDMI 1.3a, the TX-SR606 offers integrated system control with selected HDMI-compatible high-definition displays, DVD and harddisk recorders, and Blu-ray Disc players. With one remote control, you can control several functions, including Standby,Volume Command and Direct Change. RIHD lets you seamlessly integrate the TX-SR606 with other leading brand-name devices, including those in the Panasonic VIERA Link, Toshiba CE-Link, Sharp AQUOS Link, and Samsung Anynet+ ranges.

Correcting Room Distortion and Loudness with Audyssey 2EQ and Audyssey Dynamic EQ

The TX-SR606 uses Audyssey 2EQ to counter distortion created by walls, furniture, and other objects. This technology detects speaker distance, and then sets levels, delays, and crossovers, while also measuring room acoustics. Compared to one-position room correction systems, Audyssey 2EQ covers a much wider listening area. Moreover, it corrects problems in both frequency response and time domain (where most of the problems lie) across the entire listening area. The results are immediately obvious–a clear, well-balanced and natural sound.

After 2EQ calibration, Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality at lower volumes. The professionals who create music and movies do so at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. When volume is reduced on a standard home theater receiver, the bass disappears, voices change, and the surround soundstage becomes less enveloping. As volume is adjusted on the TX-SR606, however, Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment, resulting in an ideal listening experience at any volume level.

Bi-Amping Capability for High-Impact Movies and Music

The TX-SR606’s surround back speaker channels enhance the ambience and sound effects of movies. They can also be used with the front left and right channels to provide two separate amplification channels for compatible bi-amping speakers (i.e. those with two sets of input terminals). In effect, two separate channels drive the woofer and tweeter of each front speaker. This improves sound quality by maximizing power to the low-/mid- and high-range frequencies, respectively. It also gives you a more powerful, dynamic soundfield for two-channel music and movie sound effects.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio Programming via SiriusConnect Home Tuner Kit*

By using the port on the TX-SR606’s rear, it’s possible to access SIRIUS Satellite Radio. SIRIUS brings access to over 130 digital-quality channels, including 69 channels of 100% commercial-free music, plus exclusive channels of sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic, weather, and data. The TX-SR606 has a SIRIUS jack on its rear that connects to an optional SiriusConnect home tuner kit.

*SIRIUS requires separate purchase of subscription, compatible tuner and antenna.

Music Optimizer to Support Compressed Digital Music Files

While MP3 or AAC files may sound fine on a portable digital player, the limitations of these compressed files can be exposed when played back through a home entertainment system. Onkyo has designed onboard Music Optimizer technology to improve the quality of compressed audio signals. Compressed music loses a substantial amount of bit information at higher frequencies, so the Music Optimizer technology works to overcome this limitation and enhance audio quality.

Special Features

  • HDMI 2 Input / 1 Output, 1080p bandwith – ready for next generation DVD players
  • Auto Speaker Calibration with Audyssey 2EQ – Creates an optimal listening area, not a point – perfect for families

Key technology Features:
192 kHz/24bit AD Converters: Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters , that not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD.

Dolby Digital EX / Pro-Logic IIx: Home theater realism reaches new heights with the creation of Dolby Digital EX. By adding a matrix-encoded surround back channel derived from the existing discrete left and right surround channels, the lack of rear surround in 5.1 channel is eliminated. The result – a fuller 360º experience is created…even from 5.1-channel DVD releases. Best results are obtained when Dolby Digital EX is used with movie soundtracks recorded with Dolby Digital Surround EX. Pro-Logic IIx is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic and subsequent Pro-Logic II standards. Pro-Logic IIx adds post-processing to 5.1 channel and stereo signals, creating a realistic 7.1 channel surround environment from 5.1 channel movies and stereo sources, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio.

NeuralSurround: Neural Surround™ represents the latest advancement in surround technology developed for music and is adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcast of surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround™ employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements. System playback is scalable from 5.1 to 7.1 multi channel surround playback.

VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry): Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. Previously only found on our high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result — a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s.

XM Ready: The XM “Connect-and-Play,” is a revolutionary technology platform designed to integrate XM into virtually any home or portable consumer electronics entertainment device. By matching XM Ready® audio systems with a simple, elegant antenna/receiver, getting XM becomes even easier for home audio listeners.

DTS-ES 96/24 Neo6: There are two DTS®-ES™ (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 and DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1. The DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1, like Dolby® Digital Surround EX™, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. There’s also DTS® Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS®, which, like Dolby® Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby® Digital. Receivers carrying the “96/24” designation are able to decode a new high-resolution audio format, DTS-96/24. This breakthrough allows for high quality, 5.1 channel audio encoded at 96kHz/24-bit resolution to be stored on a DVD-Video disc (or the DVD-Video portion of a DVD-Audio disc). This format is compatible with all DVD players, with those able to pass a 96kHz signal providing the highest quality output (DTS-96/24 is also backwards compatible with older 48kHz DVD player models).

HDMI COnnectivity: HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) This high-bandwidth interface supports not only brilliant digital video, but digital audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data—more than twice what’s needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound—can be handled, with room for future requirements. All this data is kept in the digital domain, as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed, to ensure the highest sound and video quality available.

HDMI is fully backward compatible with PCs,displays and consumer electronics devices incorporating the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard. Both HDMI and DVI were pioneered by Silicon Image and are based on TMDS®, Silicon Image’s powerful, high-speed, serial link technology. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, and with 5 Gbps of bandwidth, HDMI can accommodate future enhancements and requirements. Because HDMI was designed specifically for consumer electronics applications, it offers an array of additional consumer enhancements. As digital content can manifest itself in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, HDMI-enabled systems will automatically configure to display content in the most effective format. In addition, HDMI enables a single remote point and click, allowing manufacturers to deliver home theater systems that automatically configure from a single command from a remote control — turning on or off the components necessary to view a DVD, listen to a CD, or watch cable or satellite TV.

Powered Zone 2: By dedicating a pair of channels on receivers with this capability, you don’t need an external amplifier to enjoy an independent stereo audio source in a remote room. For example, on higher-end models this allows for a full 5.1 channel movie to be enjoyed in the home theater, while simultaneously sending a song from a CD (or other source) to speakers in another room.

WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology): Imagine turning up the volume and filling your entertainment room with noise-free, impressively powerful, true-to-life sound. That’s the benefit of Wide Range Amplifier Technology. Originally developed for our most expensive high-end amplifiers to handle the sonic demands of today’s digital age, you’ll now find WRAT even in our lowest-priced A/V receivers. The WRAT family of technologies includes a broader frequency range with lower noise entering the signal path – perfectly suited for new high resolution DVD-Audio and SACD formats.
